I treat product design and engineering as a single discipline, because splitting them is where most problems come from: beautiful interfaces that cannot be built, and solid systems nobody can follow. I start from research and prototype, build what I design, and measure. In recent years that includes language models —RAG, assistants, classification— held to the same standard as everything else: it ships when it is right often enough, not when it is impressive.
